What is Carraig Abhainn?

Carraig Abhainn is Carlow’s first and largest purpose-built student accommodation village, bringing the best of collegiate life to Carlow.

Where is Carraig Abhainn?

We are located directly opposite the gates of Carlow IT — you will not find more convenient accommodation closer.

Carlow Town is easily reached via the M9 Dublin-Waterford motorway, approximately one hour’s drive from Dublin’s Red Cow Interchange, and Carlow is only one hour from Waterford city.

From Carlow town, take the Kilkenny Road. You will see the campus of Carlow IT on your left-hand side. Taking the first left turn after the campus, onto Mortarstown Road and Carraig Abhainn is the second entrance on the right-hand side directly opposite the main gates of Carlow IT.

The Management Office is located, the second block on the right.

How can I book a room at Carraig Abhainn?

Bookings are taken between June and 31st August for the following academic year. Early booking is recommended. All bookings are done online. To book click here

How can I pay my deposit?

Deposits are paid via Bank Transfer following completion of the online booking form

Should I pay my deposit before I am accepted to Carlow IT or Carlow College?

Yes, a deposit of €400 is required upon application. Should you be unsuccessful in gaining admittance to Carlow IT or Carlow College, Carraig Abhainn will refund €350 of the deposit, once you inform us within three days of the first round of CAO offers.

Is my deposit refundable?

Yes, the €400 deposit is fully refundable (subject to inspection) at the end of the rental period. Students who leave early may receive their deposit back, providing they follow the protocol laid down, including providing one month’s written notice. Students who leave before 31st March will forfeit their deposit.

How will I pay my rent?

For now there is only one way of paying, bank transfer. All payments must go through our website. The Carraig Abhainn office does not except credit card, cheques or cash. Rent may be paid in a lump sum at the start of the year, or in three moieties, due on the first day of September, December and March. Here clink for room rates. click here

What does my rent include?

You won’t get any nasty surprises at Carraig Abhainn, as parking, refuse collection, water charges, Wi-Fi connection and all utility bills are included in your rent. Electric storage heating and hot water are included.

How many students live in each apartment?

You will share with two or three other students. Each apartment has two single bedrooms, with a shared bathroom, and one ensuite twin room. Each apartment has a comfortable, well-furnished, shared living room and kitchen. Apartments will be single-sex unless residents specifically choose to share with friends of the opposite sex. We will do our best to accommodate sharing requests.

Can you cater for my mobility issues or other additional needs?

Is Carraig Abhainn a smoke-free zone?

In the interests of student health and wellbeing, smoking is not permitted inside the apartments, but students may smoke outside the apartments.

Do I have to leave Carraig Abhainn during Easter and Christmas holiday periods?

No. The rental period is for thirty-eight weeks, including the Easter and Christmas periods, and students are welcome to stay at Carraig Abhainn during holidays, if they wish. This makes Carraig Abhainn particularly suitable for international students requiring accommodation at Carlow IT.

How is my bedroom furnished?

Each bedroom contains a bed with mattress and mattress cover, wardrobe, bedside locker, chest of drawers, study table and chair for each student. You need only provide duvet, pillows, bedding and towels.

How are the common areas furnished?

Each apartment contains a television, sofa, armchairs, dining table and chairs. The kitchen contains a cooker, fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle and a range of crockery, cutlery and cookware.

Where is the nearest laundrette?

Laundry facilities are available at Carraig Abhainn. Each apartment has a key to the laundry room, and tokens costing €3 can be purchased at the office at specified times.

Where is the Management Office?

Carraig Abhainn has an office on-site, and office hours are clearly posted. Outside office hours, administration can be contacted in emergencies. Even in less urgent situations, for instance losing keys/locking yourself out of your apartment, you can contact administration during the day and we will endeavour to help as quickly as is reasonable. Lost keys incur a replacement cost of €70 and gate fob replacement cost is €50

Can Carraig Abhainn help me to maintain the apartment properly?

Yes, periodic inspections of the apartments take place, which incentivises all students to do their bit to keep your living space clean and well-maintained. Please note charges will apply for apartments that are not maintained to the required standard. See Student Handbook for further details.

Can I bring my car to Carraig Abhainn?

Yes, at Carraig Abhainn there is ample secure car-parking which is accessible by private registered phone number. Those wishing to avail of parking within Carraig Abhainn will pay a nominal charge which contributes to the maintenance of the gates.

These include its location from the college, directly across the road. Its security gates which provide security for yourself and your car. Facilities are practical and simple to use. Staff are extremely helpful and pleasant. The site is well maintained throughout the year.
